Improving filly Tiz Worthy returns with surprise win at Sandown

Tiz Worthy enhanced her reputation as a 'little angel' in co-trainer Lucy Yeomans ' eyes with her determined first-up win at Wednesday's Sandown meeting. It is often said chestnut fillies can be a handful for connections but Yeomans said Tiz Worthy 'broke the mould' with her easygoing attitude to her trackwork and racing. 'She's not very big, but she's got a very big heart,' Yeomans, who trains Tiz Worthy in partnership with Lloyd Kennewell, said. 'She's very gutsy and very straightforward. She's very calm, very level headed and eats well.' Tiz Worthy gave away size to some of her rivals in the MRC Membership Handicap (1000m) but proved too strong late for the heavily-backed $1.60 favourite Saluted. Punters let a Jamie Melham ride get under their guards, allowing the filly to ease to start at $20, but the top jockey ensured the Hanseatic two-year-old had the last crack at the leaders in the straight. 'We didn't give her (Melham) any instructions. You don't need to give a rider like her instructions. 'It looked like she was going to whack away and run second or third but Jamie rode her beautifully.' Yeomans said a race at The Valley early next month could be a possibility for Tiz Worthy but she would discuss the rising three-year-old's immediate future with Kennewell, who is away in the US. She said Tiz Worthy had not grown a great deal since joining the stable but the camp had hopes she would measure up to harder races in the spring. 'It looks like she's improved this prep, which is exciting,' Yeomans said. 'She's a very hardy and tough little filly, so hopefully she's there in the spring.'
